Mrs. Cynthia Lumor Corporate Services Executive for multinational mobile telecommunications giant, MTN has expressed confidently that the organization has played an important role in the development of Ghana with its numerous innovative products.

Speaking at the MTN 2017 editor’s forum held at Capital View Hotel Thursday 18th May at Koforidua in the Eastern Region, she explained the company has taken customers through lots of transformational telecommunications processes from voice and text to Information Communication Technology (ICT) programmes. She asserted evolution of telecom space no longer comprise just mobile operators but participation of Internet Services Providers (ISP), Broadband services and many others.

She also said the company introduced the 2G, 3G, 4G and currently fiber browsing services for fast and easy access to the internet, explaining the 2G has 83% population, 29% geographic coverage, 3G has 54% population, 29.2% geographic coverage and 4G has 28% population with 18.3% geographic coverage.

According to Mrs. Lumor, the company has been able to provide 142 social projects in 9 years at a cost of GHS 32.2m including a maternity block at the Tema General Hospital, scholarship programme for 300 students over 3 years, oil palm factory for women at Juaso in the Ashanti region and the Heroes of Change programme shown on television. Moreover she averred the company has granted 17 projects at a cost of GHS 25m in the Eastern region.

She said MTN Ghana, is anticipating 5 strategic areas for the year 2017 namely, Drive Sustainable Growth, Distinct Customer Experience, Transforming Operating Module, Creating and Managing Stakeholder Value as well as Best Practice.

Mrs. Lumor opined through ground-breaking services by the company, customers are able to enjoy facilities such as business employment, financial inclusion, relationships, education, entertainment, data services and value added services. In addition she mentioned the mobile money concept and also revealed the company has introduced an insurance package dubbed “Ayoo” for mobile money subscribers.

She said MTN Ghana currently works with 16 banks in the country with regards to mobile money services and affirmed over 8.5m customers subscribe to the mobile money services. What’s more, she said the company has 57000 active agents.

She however explained the company partners with the various banks to transact most of its mobile money businesses, such as the “Yello Save” product , and others so there is no way anyone can say the mobile money theory is affecting patronage of banks, she said.  She further said government has no intention of collapsing mobile money services because government has said a lot about how it intends to use mobile money services in diverse ways explaining the service partners with the government to make leap payments.

However, she urged individuals to be very vigilant and not give out their mobile money pin numbers to others and also cautioned against fraudsters who pretend to send items from other countries through internet transactions.
